Every child deserves a forever family.

Where every child’s story is honored, shared, and given the chance to grow.

The Miami Heart Gallery is an online multimedia exhibit featuring children in Miami-Dade County’s foster care system who are eligible for adoption. This initiative is a collaboration between Citrus Family Care Network and The Children’s Trust.

❊ FAQs

You’ve got questions,
we’ve got answers

  • In Florida, adoption is open to many types of families. You may be married or single, already a parent or never a parent, in your 20s or in your 60s, a renter or homeowner, or someone of modest means or great wealth. What matters most is the ability to love a child, provide for their basic needs, and make a lifelong commitment. Certain felony criminal records, however, may disqualify individuals from adopting.

  • Children become eligible for adoption once a court has terminated the parental rights of their birth parents. Until then, many children in foster care may still be working toward reunification with their families.

  • There is no set income requirement. As part of the home study, your financial stability will be reviewed to ensure you can provide for a child’s basic needs. Families will never be disqualified based on income alone.

  • Adopting through Florida’s community-based care system comes at little to no cost. Families are not charged for pre-adoptive training, home studies, or placement. Some one-time expenses, such as attorney fees, court costs, travel, or birth certificate fees, may occur, but many of these can be reimbursed by the state.

  • The timeline varies depending on each case. Generally, background checks, adoptive parent training, and the home study can be completed in less than nine months.

  • No. A child is not available for adoption until a court has permanently terminated the parental rights of their birth parents. Once finalized, adoption in Florida is a secure and permanent process.

  • Yes. Adoptive parents are provided with a comprehensive case history, including the child’s medical background, foster care placements, developmental level, and personal interests such as hobbies, habits, and likes or dislikes. This helps families determine how the child may fit into their home.

  • In Florida, “special needs” does not always mean a disability. A child may qualify for special needs adoption assistance if they meet one or more of these criteria:

    • Age 8 or older

    • Part of a sibling group being placed together

    • African-American or racially mixed

    • Strong emotional ties with foster parents or relative caregivers

    • Diagnosed with a mental, physical, or emotional handicap

Special needs adoption often comes with additional resources, support, and financial assistance to ensure families have what they need.

  • Yes. Florida adoption laws do not discriminate based on marital status or sexual orientation. Single individuals and same-sex couples are welcome to adopt. What matters most is providing a safe, loving, and stable home.

  • Support is available both before and after adoption. Families can access informational resources, support groups, counseling, training, and guidance throughout the process. Post-adoption, Citrus Family Care Network provides services such as case management, support groups, referrals, and ongoing resources to help families adjust and thrive.
